2016 Activity Report

Monthly On-Going Activity

  • Subcommittee ~ The Virtual Governance Subcommittee met regularly during 2016 to work on definitions, training and standard recommendations for the development of Virtual Teams (which includes both Virtual Operation Support Teams and Social Media Assessment & Response Team representation).

  •    IAEM ~ The International Association of Emergency Management (IAEM) met for its annual conference  in Savannah, Georgia. Board President, Pascal Schuback, attended.

August 2016
  • Damage Assessors Game ~ Partnered with ER Assist to evaluate and provide feedback on their Damage Assessment module. This beta test involved access open for a week to examine the product. Feedback was provided via Slack to their developers.  
  • SMARSH Tour ~ Board Members, Pascal Schuback and Eric Frank, and Cheryl Bledsoe attended a tour of Smarsh Headquarters in Portland, Oregon. While attending the tour, SMARSH and Virtual EMA participated in #SMEMChat and conducted an impromptu Periscope interview about archiving. 
  • Comms Connect Conference ~ Board Member, Caroline Milligan spoke at the Comms Connect Conference in Wellington, New Zealand, about Virtual Teams and Virtual EMA.

June 2016

  • Exercise Participation ~ Several Board Members, Scott Reuter, Pascal Schuback, Eric Frank and Cheryl Bledsoe participated in the Cascadia Rising Earthquake Exercise as evaluators and team leaders for the Oregon Virtual Operations Support Team during the exercise.

May 2016

  • New Board Member ~ Virtual EMA welcomed a new Board Member, Caroline Milligan, who will also serve as our Board Secretary.
  • Speaking Engagements ~ Several Board Members spoke at the World Conference on Disaster Management in Toronto, Canada, Washington Social Media Summit in Tumwater, Washington and the Communications Conference in Sydney, Australia.  One of our members, Steve Peterson, also went to Brazil to speak at the ISCRAM conference.

April 2016
  • Meetup ~ Kim Stephens & Cheryl Bledsoe attended the National Emergency Management Association's Mid-Year Conference in Alexandria, Virginia, and enjoyed meeting up with a number of our Virtual EMA Members and #SMEM Colleagues.
  • Speaking Engagement ~ Cheryl Bledsoe spoke at the Government Social Media Conference (#GSMCon) in Reno, Nevada, about the development of Virtual Operations Support Teams (VOST)

  • Research Participation ~ The Virtual EMA participated in a research study with Monash University in  Australia on the effectiveness of Virtual Teams in Emergency Response.
February 2016

  • Webinar ~ We partnered with Signal to learn more about this web-based social media monitoring platform. Over 20 people participated and requested information during this instructive webinar.

January 2016

  •  #SMEMBowl ~ We partnered with Scraawl to evaluate a social media analytics platform during the Superbowl as 25 participants practiced their social media monitoring skills that are used regularly in Virtual Operations Support Teams.
  • Membership Survey ~ We conducted a survey of our members which informed our annual strategy and buildout of our website resources.
